Dollar Girl's World Challenge

In July 2017, local girl Erin Potter is heading to Madagascar on the adventure of a lifetime.

Please read this message from Erin ……

“I am 15 years old and have lived in Dollar my whole life. I’m in my fourth year at Kinross High School and have an amazing opportunity in the summer of 2017 when I will be spending 3 weeks in Madagascar on an expedition with an organisation called World Challenge. This expedition includes a community project in a care home called Akany Avoko. Akany Avoko is a children's centre that feeds, clothes, educates and provides a safe environment for children from broken families, orphans, street kids and young people with disabilities. The first part of my challenge is to raise more than £4500 required for the expedition and the various vaccinations and medical supplies to keep me safe while I am there. This is not an average school trip and is certainly not a holiday. It is a challenging expedition that will significantly benefit the local community we will visit. It will teach my teammates and I valuable life skills such as leadership, communication and teamwork. This experience will test me personally in multiple ways and I am both excited and nervous at the prospect of travelling so far from home. I am confident it will enhance my skills, knowledge and abilities as I continue through my education over the next few years, and onto higher education in the future, possibly as a nursing student.

Since December 2015 I have raised over £2000 in a variety of ways including bake sales, babysitting, car boot sale, a family ceilidh and a number of donations from family, friends and a local business. Future events I am planning include bag packing in a local supermarket and an abseil from the Titan Crane in Glasgow. I am also looking for a weekend job or regular babysitting to earn extra money.

As we approach Christmas, I am so grateful to Brian Devlin, our treasured local butcher, who has offered an amazing raffle prize of a £50 voucher for the shop. This could help toward your Christmas or New Year order, or just splash out for a yummy steak dinner!! Raffle tickets are £1 each, available from the shop or contact my Mum (Carol) on cazpotter@btopenworld.com. The raffle will be drawn at noon on Saturday 17th December when I will also be holding a bake sale outside the shop.

I really can't say a big enough thank you to Brian. Any more support the local community can offer will be really appreciated, whether that is through buying raffle tickets, coming along to the bake sale on 17th December, offering babysitting opportunities or even dog walking. You can contact me via my Mum as above.

If you would like some more information on World Challenge and their ethos then please take a look at Erin's page on their website https://www.myworldchallenge.com/make-a-contribution.asp?femid=929965&ch=mL3nm7.

Thanks so much
Erin Potter”

Funding Opportunities for local Community Groups

Dollar Community Council Grant Funding

EDF Burnfoot Hill, Burnfoot North and Rhodders Funds

These three charitable Funds are provided by EDF, the developer of the Burnfoot Hill, Burnfoot North and Rhodders Wind Farms. The funds benefit a number of different communities in Perth & Kinross and Clackmannanshire.

The Burnfoot Hill Community Fund benefits the Community Council areas of Alva, Dollar, Menstrie and Tillicoultry in Clackmannanshire. Representatives of each of these Community Councils and their Communities form a decision panel that considers applications from eligible groups. The panel decided to trial a scheme under the auspices of each Community Council whereby small amounts could be granted.

Micro Grant Scheme

The scheme allows Dollar Community Council to make awards up to a maximum of £250 to groups and on occasion individuals who would not perhaps be eligible to apply to the main fund. There are some restrictions on the use of the funds and any award should show some benefit to the community of Dollar. To find out more or to receive an information pack and application form contact Stephen Leitch by email at Stephen.leitch1@btinternet.com or by phone on 07734 130082.

The EDF Burnfoot Hill Community Fund Main Funding

Eligible groups can apply to the fund for a grant up to a maximum of £2,000 for specific projects that in the main will provide a level of community benefit. Most applications are for projects of a year or less in duration, however some may be for projects up to three years in length with a maximum of £2,000 allocated each year. There are two application rounds each year.
